Reducing the Food Mileage

2008 is the year that I am “greening  my family and home”, I’m trying to live more eco-friendly, and attempting to reduce those food miles by growing our own organic veggies. Our garden has also helped Thade realize that our food doesn’t just come from Wal-Mart.

I’m really proud of those little Yellow Squash, and it proves to those local naysayers that YES, you can grow veggies without pesticides. I can’t wait to make my Garlic-Squash Couscous with my fresh produce.

We are out in the garden every day in the morning before it is too warm. Occasionally we have a cool insect that Thade has never seen before, and sometimes a toad or two. I love to watch the busy honey bees buzzing from flower to flower.

This week we had an amazing Moth that paid the garden a visit. The moth was huge, and Thade couldn’t believe his eyes. He asked if it was a bat, and gave it a little space just in case it was.

I hope that next week we’ll have a few more veggies, and maybe the kids will give them a try too.

p.s. I was on a country drive this morning and noticed a man putting some fresh produce on this little counter by the drive-way. There was a FREE sign, so you bet i turned the car around and picked up some yummy cucumbers! He even had a small sign that said “No money, we are happy to share”. I thought what a wonderful blessing he is giving to others! Just made my day!!!

  3. Thanks Mimi! Great job on your garden and yard too! I think it is so important to reduce the amount of chemicals that we are eating, and I just can’t put any chemicals on mine… The bugs get a few, but I’m proud to serve those chemical free fruits and veggies.

Thanks for the squash compliment too, I’m so proud of them, and Thade is too 🙂 Big hugs and have a great weekend!

  4. Thanks Heather! Wow, what an amazing find, and what a kind person too 🙂 I bet the cucumbers were very tasty! Enjoy your fresh veggies! Sending big hugs your way, and I hope that you have a great weekend!

  5. Thanks Susan! The moth was really huge! It could have fit in the palm of my hand. It was so pretty though, but Thade was a little worried that it was going to bite 😉 I hope to get a few more veggies out of the garden, and I hope that Thade will try a few of them too. Sending big hugs your way and I hope that you have a great weekend!
