Well, Soccer Was A Bust

The big kids were so excited to play their first soccer games this weekend, but the weather just wouldn’t cooperate.

010

Dylan’s game was up first, and we were hoping that the rain would hold off.

The Vikings took the field, got in a whole 2 minutes of play.

Then there was a clap of thunder and two bolts of lightning, and the game was called off.

Dylan was really sad…

We waited for the clock to roll around to 10:45 a.m., and for the rain to go away for Thade’s game,

but it just didn’t stop.

Thade was really sad too.

I hope the weather is a little better next week…

Homework

We almost have a full month of school wrapped up, and I am exhausted. Between early mornings, late evenings, and weekend activities too, we are extra busy. Getting the kids back into a school routine has been tough, especially when it comes to homework.

Thade has homework Monday-Thursday, and I also give him at home homework to do too. He calls it mom-work. It isn’t much, but I think it is really helping him out with his reading and spelling too.

Every night and even on the weekends, I have him read a chapter from a non-school book. It doesn’t take him too long, and he usually reads two or three chapters.

020

He will also read board books to Agnes and Dylan, they love to listen to their big brother read.

Thade has been frustrated this year by the school’s reading limitations on reading materials. He has gone to the school library several times and tried to check out a very specific library book ( he is reading at a higher level) and he isn’t allowed to check out the book. I don’t think that this practice is fair at all, and I’m a bit of a stinker when it comes to rules, so…

0023

To help keep him interested in and excited about reading, I let him go to the public library, use his library card, and pick out whatever book he wants to read. He knows the children’s section well, and sticks with the third grade level books. He is so proud when he gets to use his card, and find a favorite book to read.

I also have him write out his spelling words nightly, and we even do a practice spelling test on Thursdays.

013

We use a Composition notebook at home, it keeps all of this spelling “worksheets” nice and neat. I can also keep an eye on how his handwriting is improving. I have seen a big improvement in his spelling already, most weeks he gets a 106% on his spelling tests.

It isn’t much, in fact after snack time it only takes about 20 minutes for Thade to finish his homework and his mom-work too. I plan on carrying on this tradition when Dylan enters school next year too.

So what about you… How do you help your kiddos with their homework?

Fall Is In The Air

Today is our first really cool almost Fall day. We woke up to a beautiful 48 degree day, and I couldn’t be happier. I love the cloudy skies, the rainy days, the changing leaves, and the cooler weather too.

004

Today, I’m excited about…

008

Baking! I love to bake in the Fall, there is nothing better than coming in from a rainy day to delicious treats baking in the kitchen.

0071

My super cute cat crashing out all over the house, he loves to nap the Autumn away.

0034

Fuzzy Socks! I love to bust out my fuzzy-stripey-oh-so-comfy sock collection in the Fall.

0072

Long sleeves and hoodies too!

Last but not least

0081

crunchy leaves.

I just love Fall. What about you? Do you love Fall too.

I’ll Be Baking

This week I have an opportunity to make a bunch of desserts for a bunch of super cool buddies, so I’ll be in the kitchen for the next two days. I’m heading out to get supplies today, and I can’t wait to get started!

0032

I’ll be baking, or no baking:

  • Cakerdoodles (3 dozen)
  • No Bake Cookies (3 dozen)
  • Candy Bar Cookies (pictured above and 3 dozen too)
  • Chocolate Whoopie Pies  (3 dozen)
  • Homemade Oatmeal Cream Pies (3 dozen)

I’ve got 15 dozen treats to make. The kitchen is going to be busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
