Corn & Okra

We have several little seedlings making an appearance in the garden this week.

The Sweet Corn is just starting to sprout. I’m giving corn another shot this Summer, I’ve yet to have any success with it. This year I’ve planted it in blocks, instead of rows, so we’ll see if it works. I love Sweet Corn, it is delicious.

The Okra has started sprouting too. Last year I didn’t plant enough Okra, and this year I think I planted too much. Oh well, I don’t think my family will complain if we have Okra with every meal.

School Happenings

With the school year all wrapped up, I thought I would recap a few moments from the last month of school.

Dylan was sad that preschool was coming to an end. He really, truly loved preschool. He has been attending Sunbeam for two years, and the teaching staff there is amazing. You can really tell that they love their job, and all of the kiddos too. It is hard to say good-bye to preschool, but my little guy will be a kindergartner this Fall…

He is excited about the journey into big kid school, but he misses preschool already.

May was especially busy for Thade. There were a lot of school activities going on. He had something on the calendar every day. He finished up the blooming reader program early in the month. He also got to participate in two parties, and a trip to the movies because he read so many books.

He and two of his very best buddies were in a choir. They preformed several songs at a retirement party for the Superintendent of our school district. Thade had a lot of fun, he doesn’t have stage-fright at all.

0242

We got to visit school on another afternoon, Thade was performing in the Talent Show.

0191

He did a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, and he did great. He was really happy that he earned his green belt before the Talent Show too.

0222

Thade won three awards at the 2nd Grade awards assembly. He was really excited that two of those awards came with coupons to Taco Bell.

It was hard wrapping up the year. There will be lots of changes next year.

0212

Thade sat under his favorite tree one last time. It has been our meeting place for quite a while. Next year he will be at a different Attendance Center (3rd-5th grade). He will have a new school to go to, but his friends will be there.

0203

Dylan will be attending a separate Attendance Center. Luckily he is already really familiar with the building (it’s Thade’s old school). I’ll have to make some changes with our morning routine and afternoon pick-up with both boys in different schools. I’m already a little concerned about it, but I’m trying my best to remain positive.

I am really happy that the lazy days of Summer have arrived. We all are in need of a break.

Yard Sale Finds

It has been a long time since I’ve done one of these posts. Sadly I haven’t been hitting up the yard sales or thrift stores. On Mother’s Day weekend it was the City Wide Yard  Sale. I had cleaned out and boxed up a lot of stuff just in case we had one. We decided to shop this  year, and have a sale at a later date. I was happy we went shopping.

0013

I found some cute shirts for Agnes.

0086

I found some more dishes that needed to come home with me. I also found two hand-stitched pillow cases for just $.25. I am going to hang on the them, and use them for Agnes when she has a big girl bed.

0113

I found a few purses, and James found some cool finds too. The boys were excited when they got a great deal on some NERF guns.

The craziest buy of the day was a freebie!

0093

We were visiting a sale when James spotted a set of encyclopedias. The gentleman hosting the sale asked James if he liked them. James said sure, you never see encyclopedia sets anymore. So the gentleman said you can have them. James, asked the price, and again he said you can have them. We were really surprised when he said they were free. It is a full set, and so very cool. He was really nice too, he even helped us out to the mini-van with the new books. The kids were so excited too.

The sales were a lot of fun this year. I love all of our new to us finds.

More Books

It’s hard for me to pass up books… When we were visiting Thade’s school for the talent show I noticed two large tables filled with books, and they were free. I stopped one of the teachers, and she said take as many as you want.

0022

I’ve made it a habit of mine to carry along a re-useable shopping bag in my bag, and I was happy to have it with me.

0221

I think we ended up bringing home twenty books. Dylan was really excited. Between the book sale  at the library, and the free sale at the school, his library at home is really growing.

The “new” books kept Agnes entertained for a bit at the talent show too. I found one all about firetrucks, which are her favorite at the moment.

So what freebies are too good for you to pass up?
