Not Going Out In March

This is an experiment that might come back and haunt me, but I’m going to give it a try. I want to see if we can eat every meal; Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner at home for the entire month of March. Yep, your read that right, zero Take-out and zero Fast Food for the entire month.

I’m hoping that it will help out the food budget a bit, but I bet the boys will grow tired of home cooked meals, and riot against me with a flurry of take-out foods. I wonder if there is such a thing as Happy Meal withdrawal?

Wish me luck, this is going to be an interesting March.

P.S. Look forward to savings totals, and a few guest posts from my hubby James… Which may or may not be grumpy.

  1. Nicole-big goal but it can be done! Every few months Sam and I do this, but we do reward ourselves with an out-to-eat night at the end if we manage to stick to the plan!! I’ve found that it can’t be done without a menu for me. I need all the help in the kitchen I can get!! Good Luck!

  2. I’ve done it before-when my kids were toddlers. Hubby did not like it at all. He likes to take the family out to eat every week., I guess it’s his way of celebrating another week of work finished. You’re a pretty innovative cook, though, and you bake yummy desserts, so maybe your hubby will be happier than mine was!
    Keep us posted!

  3. Oh boy! There is no way I could pull it off in our crazy house. I hate eating out and the money it wastes but sometimes quick and easy wins. I told my hubby of your plan and he just laughed at the idea that we could do it. I may have to try to cut down to one meal a week out but Corrynn may start suffering from chicken nugget withdrawals.

And why is James looking at that cupcake like that?

  4. Thanks Marva! I hope that we can make it through the month. I don’t know if the boys are going to be happy though 😉

  5. Thanks Ellie! Thanks for the support 🙂 I don’t know if we will make it through, the boy’s love their take-out 🙂

  6. Thanks Maggie! I hope that we can make it through March, but I don’t know if the boys will like it too much. I love to menu plan, and I’m working on a March menu that includes some take-out fake-outs. I like your idea of the celebration meal at the end of the month too 🙂

  7. Thanks Mimi! I’m glad that you have had success with less take-out meals, you are giving me hope 🙂 My hubby loves take-out foods, but I’m just not that big of a fan of them anymore. I know Thade will be grumpy though, he LOVES Happy Meals 😉

  8. Thanks Stacey! It is going to be quite a month, my guys are already complaining and it isn’t even March yet 😉 I hope that we can make it through the month, but I don’t know.

James is making a grumpy face at my cupcake, because I ate his cupcake and then swapped it for another one 😉 They were really tasty cupcakes though 😉

  9. I look forward to seeing your month of meals to keep your guys happy. I may have to steal some new ideas to liven up our suppers. We seem to have a lot of the same few things over and over. Good luck!

  10. Thanks Stacey! I’ll have my menu up soon, and I think I might expand it to breakfast and lunch too. Thade is already mad about not getting any take-out, but Dylan doesn’t seem to mind 😉

  11. This should make you happy Nico- we eat almost all our meals here. Maybe once or twice a month my mom will treat me to lunch while I’m with her and the boys. We don’t make a big deal out of not eating out, it’s something we had to give up in order for us to stay within budget while I’m at home with the boys. I know you can do it and you may be surprised at how much you don’t even miss eating out! Looking forward to your reports!

  12. Thanks Heather! That is awesome! I am super proud of you and your family too. I’m really bad about giving in to my boy’s wants for Fast Food, and I’m just so sick of the prices. I don’t know if my family is going to be too happy with me by the end of March, but I know we are going to see some serious savings 🙂

  13. Yep, fast food prices are out of this world! Try to stock up on your boys favs so when you are in the car you can say “but wait at home we will have your favorite ___”. I also try to make it back home in the mornings before lunch hunger strikes them! And I keep a box or bag of goldfish in the car for munchies to hold them over till we get home. Good luck!

  14. Thanks Heather! Those are great tips! I know it is going to be tough when we are out running errands, and Thade spots all of his favorite fast food places. I hope to make an Aldi run and stock up the pantry before March, and make sure and pack along cups of Juice and Crackers anytime the kids are in the car. I think it is going to be a fun challenge, but I think the boys are going to be mad at me by April 😉
