I was picking up Thade from preschool today, and the kiddos all sounded so excited. Today they were having a Thanksgiving Party, and Thade couldn’t wait. As the class was winding down, I overheard the teacher say to make sure and have your parent’s check your backpacks for some important handouts, then I heard the words I was dreading to hear…
Teacher: Now we are going to talk about our Christmas Party!
Nico (thinking) :Oh, goodness.
Teacher: I’m sending home handouts that explain our party, and what date it will be on.
Nico (thinking): Cool, now Thade will be talking about this party 24 hours a day for the next month, but at least I have a little warning.
Teacher: Don’t forget to remind Mom that while she is out shopping this weekend, to pick up 22 presents for the Christmas Party. We will each be giving a present to all of the kids in the class, so make sure and tell her that.
Nico (thinking): Oh crap!
So now I have to come up with 22 gender neutral non-sugar presents for 22 four year-old boys and girls. Oh yeah and 4 teacher presents too. Yeah, I’m already sick of holiday shopping and it isn’t even Thanksgiving yet…
WOW! I would be none to pleased about that! I have never heard of a school that forces you to buy presents for 22 kids with no choice in the matter. Good luck and let us know what you come up with…..hugs…..Ellie
That is horrible! Perhaps some other parents will rally and complain before this gets out of hand. and you won’t have to say a word. Meanwhile I’ll be thinking of gift ideas for you!
Yup, I’ve been doing that every year. I highly recommend Dollar Tree or any dollar store activity books, puzzles. bubble blowing sets, coloring books, magic card dets, etc. Thank goodness for the dollar stores! goody bags with a pencil, some treats, and a fancy eraser are good too. You should be able to make goody bags for the entire class for less than $5. total.
Have fun with it!
Don’t forget candy canes-you can buy some pipe cleaner and twist it around a candy cane to make it look like an animal. One per kid, and they love it.
Here’s where I got my candy cane animal ideas:

The kiddos helped me make them, so it was a fun bonus for them.
Thanks Ellie! I was a little surprised, but I’m sure that we will come up with something cool for the kiddos. My shopping list just keeps getting bigger 😉
Thanks Heather! It does seem a little crazy to me, I know it is fun for the kiddos, but man preschool is awfully pricey 😉
Thanks Mimi! Thanks for the great ideas, I really appreciate all the help. I’m so stressed about the holiday shopping that my noggin can’t handle another gift request at the moment, not to mention 22 😉 Sending big hugs your way!
seems like you would have to have a special savings account just for all the preschool related costs. yikes! I taught kindergarten and other elem grades for a number of years before getting pregnant and we never asked the parents to bring gifts for us or the classmates. Hang in there!!
p.s. did you read momadvice’s post about her wish list? I am going nuts over the blessed necklace from etsy!!!
Thanks Heather! I should probably start investing in a savings account for when Dylan goes to preschool… who knows just how expensive it is going to be then 😉
Holy smokes! 22 gifts??? You’re so creative though, I know you’ll think of something great for pennies 😀 .
Thanks Susan! I was shocked when I heard that we needed to come up with 22 presents, and it isn’t even Thanksgiving. I hope to come up with something though, but I think I’m putting it off until December 😉
YOu make me laugh!!!
Thanks Heather! You are too sweet! Big hugs and giggles too 🙂
Buying something small for everyone is what the drill has been for the past 2 years in school. They recommend things like pencils and simple, cheap things so everyone will get the same thing. I have been lucky to use my craftyness and make an ornament for all of the students. The kids have got a personalized juice lid ornament. I at least hope this is something that won’t end up in the trash and I love to make ornaments for home so when the kids are on their own they have some special ornaments for their first trees wherever they are. I will make sure and bring something to MOPS in case you are still procrastinating!
Thanks Stacey! You are so creative 🙂 Your ornaments sound adorable, and perfect for a Christmas gift. Thade is so excited about the Preschool Christmas Party, he just can’t wait one minute longer 😉
