Here Comes the Ice

Last night we were watching the weather closely, and hoping that it wouldn’t get too bad. Thade really wanted to go to our Church’s Christmas Program, and while we were getting ready to go the bad weather was way west of us. I bundled up the kiddos and we went to the program, James was going to call if the weather was starting to get worse.

The Christmas Program was a lot of fun, and both boys enjoyed all of the music. Thade was really excited, at the end of the program the Youth Pastor had all of the kiddos in the audience Preschool to High School age raise their hands so they could receive a treat bag full of candy. Thade was jumping up and down and shouting “I’m a preschooler, I love candy!” Then my phone rang…

James said that the weather was getting bad, and turning worse quickly. The winds were picking up again, and icy conditions were already on the way. I got all of the coats and hats on the kiddos and we were making our way outdoors, and then we heard something that we usually don’t hear in December, thunder… There were loud claps of thunder and bright flashes of lightning, the winds were blowing fast, all while tiny hail-like sleet fell. I carried Dylan and held on to Thade’s hand and we ventured outdoors in the bad weather. Dylan screamed as the tiny, stinging hail hit us, and Thade ran as quickly as he could.

We made it to the car, and we were all freezing. Earlier in the day the weather was warm and sunny, we even went outdoors and played. By nightfall it was a whole other story, the strong winds had blown in a cold front, which collided with the warm front, and it brought along freezing temps, and thunder sleet. We slowly made our way home on the icy streets, as the thunder and lightning continued. Both of the kiddos were really nervous, it is so rare that we get thunder and lightning in December.

I was hoping that the schools would be canceled today, but it just wasn’t icy enough out there. It is still awfully cold though, and I’ve got a frozen Hot water pipe in the kitchen today. Luckily, James is off work today. Thankfully he drove Thade to school today, and drove me to my errands, I’m a terrible snow driver. We are supposed to get another round of ice storms on Thursday, and I just hope that it doesn’t get too bad.

How is your weather today? Are you iced in too?

  1. I hate driving in lightning, I’m glad that you guys are all OK.
We have storm conditions here, lots of rain and in the mountains lots of snow. It’s cold and wet!
The worst part is that there are so many accidents because people just aren’t used to driving on wet roads.
    Stay warm!

  2. That’s awful that you were alone with the boys on the way home! I’m proud of you for keeping it together! STay in as much as you can! We are supposed to get nasty weather tomorrow evening.

  3. Our weather is icky, icky, icky here in the Pacific NW. We had a snow storm hit Portland on Sunday. It’s also freezing cold……like 15 degree’s right now. We are under an “artic watch”. Different parts of the city and suburbs have different amounts of snow. The bad part is it is all packed down now. All of the schools are closed today. Stay warm 🙂 Ellie

  4. Thanks Mimi! Oh no it sounds like you have bad weather too. Be careful, and I hope that your weather improves soon. Big hugs :)It is pretty icy out today, but Thade is all done with school, so I think we will be in for the rest of the day. Maybe I can get some baking done today!

  5. Thanks Heather! I hope that the weather in your neighborhood doesn’t get too bad. With Winter on the way it seems like it could snow at any minute. I hope that you are staying warm too. We are in for the day, thank goodness.

Last night’s weather was crazy!!! I was a little worried, and poor Dylan was so upset. Thade was just ready to get in the car, it was bitter outside. We are supposed to get another round of ice storms this week.

  6. Thanks Ellie! It sounds like you have some yucky weather today too. I hope that you and your family are staying warm and that you don’t have to be out too much today. We haven’t had snow yet, just ice here. Luckily, we are in for the day, and we are just watching the weather to see what happens next.

  7. Eek, that sounds horrible! It may be cold here, but not icy and not hailing, that’s for sure: I can’t imagine what it must be like to drive in those conditions. Good to hear you and your boys got home safely.

It was -37C (I think that’s about the same in Fahrenheit) when we woke up here…lots of people didn’t plug in their vehicles and woke up to frozen engines. Our schools don’t close down for snow days, although I wouldn’t mind keeping the kids home on days like this.

So do your cold temperatures make you miss the extreme heat of summer? (I dunno, maybe you don’t consider the heat you get extreme if you’re used to it lol)

  8. Thanks Susan! Wow it sounds really cold in your neighborhood today 🙂 I hope that you and your family are staying nice and toasty with some hot cocoa!

We have had the strangest weather lately, and it looks like 2-4 inches of snow is on the way. I like the weather when it is just warm 65-70 degrees is just perfect to me 🙂

  9. IT IS SO COLD IN THIS TOWN!!!!! We just got home from your house and my hands and nose are still froze!! BRRRR I do miss the summer heat! And by our boys today I would have to say they do too! 🙂 Sending warm hugs! 😛 Shaunna

  10. Thanks Shaunna! It was so much fun having you both over for dinner tonight 🙂 Stop by anytime. This evening when I was getting the kiddos ready for bed, I went to turn on the Hot Water upstairs, and nothing happened. We now have no hot water throughout the house 🙁 Tomorrow is going to be a stinky day!

  11. I am sure the first thing you are doing when you get up is looking outside, but in case you didn’t there is a nice lil bit of snow out there. As soon as I finished shoveling at work this morning, the sidewalk was covered again. Maybe we can just have snow and no more icey yuck.

  12. Thanks Heather! Me too, it is going to be a stinky day over here 😉 It isn’t supposed to be above freezing today, so we’ll see what happens.

  13. Thanks Stacey! Thanks for the warning! I hope that you are having a nice and toasty morning 🙂 I was hoping that we would see some warmer weather, but I don’t think that it is going to happen anytime too soon 😉
