Happy Earth Day everybody! One of my Resolutions for 2008 was to become more Eco-Friendly, or Eco-Nico as my hubby calls me 😉 I am hoping to do my part to lighten my footprint on the Earth.
Last weekend I counted all of the light bulbs around the house. I wanted to see just how many more I needed to switch to CFLs, it was 23. I already have around 10 switched to CFLs, so 23 more is a big amount of light-bulbs, and a pretty big chunk of change too. I would like to have all of the bulbs switched by Summer, and this week was a great place to start. Walgreens was running a sale on CFLs 2/$6.00! I purchased 2 bulbs and placed them in the kitchen and dining room, two of the busiest rooms in the house. The old bulbs were recycled to my hubby’s workplace 😉
I love to use Natural Light around the house, whenever I can. We live in an older home, and luckily we have some pretty big windows. I gave all of the windows a deep clean yesterday, and now they can let in more of that lovely sunshine 😉 It puts me in a better mood too, must be all that vitamin D!
Once Dylan started on solids I noticed all of the baby food packaging that we were using. I’ve re-used as much as I could around the house. I’ve used the packages to organize my Nicostuff supplies, keep the junk drawer tidier, and to pack lunches. Those little glass and plastic packages come in very handy.
Glass is another item that I can’t throw away. Aesthetically it is very pleasing to my eye, and it is another great way to organize your home. I’ve reused a large glass jar to store (ahem) girly supplies in the upstairs bathroom, and a parfait glass for the downstairs bathroom. Vases also make great containers to store kitchen supplies in.
My next step is to recycle more. Locally it is difficult to find a place that recycles, and already one of the plants in our area has shut down. I was happy to read that this Spring/Summer our local Wal-Mart is going to offer Recycling Drop-off on the first Saturday of every month. They will have bins available to recycle aluminum cans, plastics, glass, and newspaper. It is a great start for our community!
Do you have big plans for Earth Day? How have you made your home more Eco-friendly?
Hi Nicole……LOVE the eco-nico nickname! Too Cute! We are huge recyclers here in the NW. I examine everything before I throw it in the trash can to see if it can be recycled. We are so lucky that our garbage haulers also take away our recycling too. We have a big 60 gallon can that is just for recycling. We can throw all of our recycling in there except glass….that has to go in the curby. We also have a bottle deposit here in Oregon so all pop/beer cans/glasses can be returned to the store to get that back. We also try to conserve whenever possible….keeping lights off when not in use ect. We did buy some new appliances that are energy savers so I hope we will see that back in our electric/gas/water bills soon. Keep up the great work! 🙂 Ellie
I gave my kids’ teacher some Earth Day workbooks that I ordered from the state agriculture dept., and I got enough for both 5th grade classes. Tonight we’re going to an Earth Day family festival and we’re walking to conserve gas.The kids and I have a nice vegetable garden planted, we recycle, reuse, and remake whatever we can. I try to only buy items in packaging that can be recycled or reused somehow. I agree with you, I don’t throw out glass, I can always find a use for it!
Happy Earth Day! I have a printable Earth Day coloring and workbook on my site that you could print out for Mr. Thade. Oh, and enter my giveaway, too. Enjoy the earth, it’s all we have!
Great job Nico! Hope you had a great day! Blessings!!!
Thanks Ellie! That is so great that you and your family are big on recycling and conserving those precious resources:) Great job!!! I hope that you all had a wonderful Earth Day!
Thanks Nana! I hope that you had a wonderful Earth Day too! Thade had fun telling everyone “Happy Earth Day” too. We got out and planted a few new plants on Earth Day, and then we took a walk in the evening and enjoyed the nice weather. I’m hoping to get a few more “Green” tasks accomplished around the house.
Thanks Mimi! Great job getting the kiddos (and their classmates) involved in Earth Day! I agree it is very important to recycle and reuse whatever we can, and conserve those resources. We have been getting out and walking more too, it is a lot of fun and I hope it will save a bit in the gas tank too 😉 Happy Earth Day to you all!
Thanks Marva! I hope that you and the boy’s had a great Earth Day too 🙂
