Getting Ready to Garden

I’ve got my seeds and I’m ready to go! Now if the weather can just cooperate, we’ll be ready to garden. This year I’m expanding the existing gardens quite a bit, and I know I’ll have more plants to add in soon.

So far for the Fruits and Veggie Garden I’ll be planting:

  • Okra
  • Sweet Corn
  • Bell Peppers
  • Pumpkins
  • Watermelon
  • Cauliflower
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Yellow Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Green beans
  • Cantaloupe
  • Zucchini

I’m also planting a butterfly garden in hopes that I’ll attract the good bugs to the yard to eat all of the bad ones. I’ll be planting:

  • Purple Coneflower Echinacea
  • Morning Glory
  • Sweet Pea
  • Sunflowers (Jumbo)
  • Dahlia

I can’t wait to get started! What are you planting in your garden this year?

Work It Out

The weather was extra nice today, and my best friend Shaunna was heading over with her son. We thought it would be fun for the kiddos to play in the backyard, and enjoy the Winter Sunshine.

She also brought along her rake, so we could get to work on the garden. While the kids played, we raked 6 bags of leaves out of the side yard, and I weeded the flower beds, just a bit. It is way more fun working on the yard with your best friend, than all by yourself. This week I’ve taken out 10 bags of leaves, so I hope that I’m all done.

It looks like we are off to a great start on the yard so far, and I can’t wait to start planting the veggie garden.

My Cats ate My Garden

One of my hopes for gardening was to harvest my seeds, and use them to help plant next year’s garden. It would get me one small step closer towards greener sustainability. I had one Cucumber left, and a handful of Green Beans so I seeded the veggies and got the seeds ready to dry.

I even had a nice sunny window to place the seeds in. They needed to dry for a week, so I marked the paper towel with the date when they should be ready. I placed them in the window, and hoped for the best.

I don’t even think they were in the window for ten minutes, before my kitties found them and ate most of my organic sustainable garden. I was a little grumpy, but I bet the kitties enjoyed the tasty organic treat.

Oh well, so much for next year’s sustainable garden…

So Long Garden

I think my garden is just about done for the season. The weather is starting to turn cooler, and the Autumn rains will be here more often than not.

I  found one teeny tiny watermelon left hiding in the garden. Thanks in part to the cool weather, I don’t think it will grow any bigger, but it might be a nice treat for a little bird, or Spencer…
