Gardening in August

003

The Okra blossoms are my very favorite part of vegetable gardening.

They are just too pretty.

This season we have been lucky enough to pick okra a time or two. I had only 5 plants that made it, and next year I’m dedicating an larger portion of the garden to okra. Fried Okra is a family favorite of ours, even Dylan loves it.

The corn is doing well too, but it isn’t ready to be picked just yet.

Finally Got Out to the Garden

This year my organic veggie garden is one big mess. I noticed two very over ripe cucumbers yesterday, and I had just about given up on getting out and getting the garden back in shape. This morning I woke up with more energy, and 2 kiddos that needed to burn off some extra energy too, so we headed outdoors to work on the garden.

I found 3 more cucumbers that were ready to be picked, and 1 lonely okra too. I spotted a few more okra that are growing well, so I hope that in a few days I’ll have enough for a mini batch of fried okra. The green beans are doing well, and there were lots of blossoms on the plants. The corn is sprouting well too, and I can’t wait for it!

I got some much needed weeding done too. It isn’t all finished, but thanks to the recent rain, the task wasn’t too bad. I hope to get a few more veggies out of the garden this Summer, and next year I hope to be a better gardener all together.

Bean Greens

0011

Despite my complete garden neglect (weeds!!) we actually picked a few green beans this week! Dylan is my awesome helper in the garden, he loves to water the plants, and the sidewalk, and his feet, but this time he was really excited when he saw the “bean greens”. That is what he shrieked as we picked a handful of Green beans.

I’m hoping for just a few more green beans out of the garden, so I can make a mini batch of Crock Pot Green Beans and Potatoes.

The Garden is a Mess

Several rainy days, and with me under the weather too, today I finally got out to the backyard to check out the gardens. The hostas were in need of a little extra water, but the hanging baskets were just fine. The butterfly garden just istn’ sprouting, and the veggie gardens are overgrown with dandelions and evil evil thistles. I don’t know if this was the best year for me to get to gardening.

James and I walked the backyard and talked about next year’s garden, and it was fun to make future plans. I’ll have to get a tiller though, and get better about weeding.

On a happier note though, I’ve got 5 okra plants that are doing well, and 3 green bean plants that are blooming. I also have a row of corn that is doing great, so maybe just maybe we’ll get some tasty corn on the cob out of the garden. I’m debating whether or not to replant some of the seeds, and hope for warmer Fall weather, and a late second crop of veggies, but I just don’t know if I can keep up with the weeding…
