Toddler Blackout Zone

Screaming, kicking, flailing, fighting… Tantrums, terrible two’s, the toddler blackout zone, whatever you call it, we are in it.

It started about a year ago exactly. Our sweet, smiley one and a half year old hit angry toddlerdom with a scream that could break glass. One year later, she hasn’t stopped. This Summer the tantrums have escalated, and sleepless nights full of separation anxiety have ensued.

I’ve been researching all about tantrums, how to deal with them, and what causes them, but I haven’t been able to prevent one of them… I am exhausted by my strong-willed-screaming-little gal, and I would love a tantrum free outing back. I am already worried about the back to school routine, Agnes does not want to get up, or dressed, or leave the house without a struggle. I’ve even tried taking her out for errands at all different times, they all end with an ear-shattering tantrum.

I don’t want to generalize, but girls really are different from boys. I don’t remember Thade throwing as many tantrums, but when he was little, he was the only. I remember Dylan throwing a major tantrum about every single afternoon, he didn’t want to nap, and he was exhausted, and hence the twenty minute scream-fest. Once he got it out of his system, he was good to go. Agnes will pitch a fit at the drop of a hat, about anything, I just don’t get it.

The tantrums, yes they are loud, and in public they are embarrassing, but she is two… The separation-anxiety at night is what really gets to me. Agnes fights sleep, we have the routine of bath, pj’s on, brush her teeth, read a book or two, and she is supposed to be in bed snoozing by 8:30 p.m.  It seems calm, and relaxing, but as soon as I try to leave, the screaming starts. I get her calmed back down, and one of the boys will come by her room to ask a question, then the screaming starts up again, and once she is calm, the other little guy drops by. So of course I have to tell the boys to please stay in their room until Agnes is asleep, and then the cat will jump the gate and wake her up. Last night I sat with her for two hours until she finally gave up the grouchiness and went to sleep. She was promptly back up at 1:3o a.m., and I finally got to go back to sleep at 5:30 a.m. There is no way this is going to work when school starts…

I’m hoping that this is phase, and it will get better, but I am one frustrated mommy at the moment.

This Week

Last Sunday I was looking at the weekly weather predictions and they had the thermometer pointing only one way. It was looking like it was going to be miserably hot all week long.

0012

The kids enjoyed a lazy Sunday afternoon.

016

It clouded up for just a bit, and I hoped we would get some rain.

030

Agnes has really enjoyed her newly arranged bedroom. She wants to be upstairs all the time.

Monday:

0045

Monday was the coolest day of the week, so we ran all of the errands.

0036

I made some homemade breadsticks for dinner.

Tuesday:

0132

It was hot…

0111

I decided to sew a little quilt. It is toddler sized, but the boys like it too.

0171

The little ones felt like lounging all afternoon.

Wednesday:

0071

It was another hot day…

0211

The kitty found a good spot to nap for the afternoon.

0181

In the afternoon I sewed a little tote. Agnes swiped it, and filled it with her books.

Thursday:

0038

We woke up to an amazing and much needed thunderstorm.

005

We could have gone out and enjoyed the cool weather, but the boys decided to stay in their pj’s and watch Doctor Who until lunch-time.

0172

By mid-afternoon it was to hot to do anything…

0112

Thade worked on a comic book series that he is drawing.

022

I decided to tape-off and repaint the nook under the stairs.

0241

I got the first coat of paint up on the walls after dinner.

Friday:

0023

It was another hot day…

My Mother-in-law visited us in the morning, and we worked on the pool. The kiddos came outside for a bit too. We got the pool chores done before the temperature was too warm.

0039

I decided to start another random project. I’m re-painting Agnes’ bedroom doors a dark purple. Purple is her favorite color this week.

Saturday:

0153

As you’ve probably guessed it was another hundred degree day…

038

I got the second coat of paint finished in Agnes’ room.

0233

I decided to paint a bit in our bedroom too.

0163

The kitty has found a new favorite place to nap.

0141

The puppy wasn’t too happy about having to go outdoors.

0123

In the afternoon I made some Sweet Roll Dough.

036

James took the boys to see a movie, so Agnes and I got to hang out for a bit. It was nice and quiet.

It was a busy week even though we barely left the house. I’m really hoping for cooler weather next week.

Living Unscheduled

This Summer I’ve tried my best to move our schedule from over-scheduled to blissfully relaxed.

3740

During the school year it is easy for me to become over-stressed and run-down. By May I was growing tired of the drop-offs, the extra practices, the parties to schedule, and the after-school activities to attend. I found myself grouchy, and snapping at everyone. I would stare at the clock, and watch the minutes tick by until it was time for the next thing that we couldn’t be late for. It wasn’t pleasant, and I was far from pleasant.

Right before Summer’s arrival, I glanced over the community center catalog filled with Summer activities, and the price-tag to match. I decided not this year. Instead of the non-stop day camps, the cooking classes, the lessons, and the sports. I let the boys pick one, and only one activity for the Summer. The both decided to stay with Tae Kwon Do. I liked their pick, Tae Kwon Do comes with air-conditioning.

This Summer James has started working seven days a week, so there was no room to plan for extended vacations. At first I was a little sad about not getting out of town, but being at home (just home) has changed my outlook. I’m only shopping for much needed items, and I’m finally getting to those projects that have been bothering me for six years. We have also not had the expense of vacations, take-out, and hotel stays. Convincing the kids of this stay-at-home Summer was a little tough, but like it or leave it we were going to spend the Summer together and happily at home.

After school was out, it took several weeks for the kids to get used to being home with each other. They each have their own agenda when school is in session, it is so much different when the day to day is removed. Thade was always my clock watcher, he was constantly worried about being late. This has changed drastically this Summer. He wants to stay up late, sleep in a bit, and he doesn’t hound me about where to be next. Dylan is still over planning everyday, but he is sleeping in more, and worrying less.

There were several fights… The boys would get grumpy with each other, and Agnes missed her alone time. It was frustrating at first, but by mud-July something clicked. The boys looked for reasons to go and play, and play together. Agnes started playing more with the boys too, and she will often ask them to read to her.

Both of the boys have become very helpful around the house. They look for chores to help with, and they don’t grumble when they are asked to help with the groceries. Agnes looks for little chores to help with too. They are working together better, and including each other.

0481

My mood has drastically changed. For once I actually feel relaxed and no longer rushed. I still get the everyday chores done, but I take more time to read and bake. I rarely watch t.v., and most of my days are spent at the sewing machine.

0274

I know next month the school-year normal will be back in full effect… I will miss our lazy, unscheduled days. It has been nice to take a break from it all this Summer.

Cabin Fever

Have you ever had that cabin fever where you want to compulsively clean every inch of your “cabin”? Well I’ve got it, and it is driving me batty…

0262

I’ve been sorting, cleaning, and rearranging all weekend. I still have more that I want to do. I think it’s time to venture out of my cabin, and get some fresh air.

This Week

This week we pretty much stayed home the entire week. Thade wasn’t feeling too good, and Agnes wasn’t feeling too good either.

017

The hot weather wasn’t helping the situation either.

0043

The kitty was extra lazy this week.

0022

She hasn’t left my side at all this week.

0094

The all too hot weather has helped me get a lot of projects going. I’ve been sorting through the kids clothes and getting them priced for a sale. I also donated another two bags when we finally got out of the house.

007

I’ve been baking lots of goodies.

0261

We’ve been lucky, and had a few pop up rain storms this week. We’ve really needed the rain.

011

I sold the baby crib this week. It was a little tough for me to get up the nerve to sell it, but we really needed the space. Agnes didn’t mind at all either. I’m using the funds for a redecorating project in the upstairs bathroom.

0044

I’ve been sewing a bit here and there. I made a little coaster and a pad to hold my phone at night.

0121

I finished last week’s book and started a new one.

0011

Friday afternoon it was rainy again, so I sewed a bit more. When James got home from work, we took the kids out to dinner. They did really well, it was nice to get a night off from cooking too.

057

Saturday, I didn’t feel like doing too much, so I milled around the house a bit. I decided to categorize and photograph the kids clothing. I’ve got 14 boxes going in bulk. So far I’ve already sold one box.
