Around The House

This weekend we’ve been staying in and working on little projects here and there. The plumbing visit didn’t go too well on Friday, so we are still without hot water. I hope that we can get everything fixed and back up and working next week.

I’ve been cleaning out the upstairs bathroom, and I hope to get to the boys room next. Then it is on to Agnes’ closet and mine too. Maybe I can talk James into cleaning out his closet too.

Earlier this month we got a majority of the Christmas decorations put away. We also cleaned out the scary closet. We got rid of a bunch of unnecessary clutter. While we were working on the closet, we decided to rearrange the dining room.

We took out the old rug, and switched around the table. We also removed a leaf from the table, that helped create much needed space in the room. We brought in a white dresser from the foyer. The dining room is light and airy now.

We still have rooms to paint, but we are getting a great start on the house this year.

Decorating For Christmas

This season, I am excited to start decorating for Christmas. So is Agnes, she is my motivation to get to it.

We started decorating the day after Thanksgiving.

This year I’m trying to add little touches of Christmas throughout the house.

Agnes is pretty happy about that.

Before we started, we cleaned… We started tackling the clutter in the “scary closet” and weeded out items that we no longer needed. We also moved out items that had wandered indoors that could be stored in the garage. We pulled out all of the Christmas decorations, and separated them into which room they would be going to. Everyone helped out too. The chore was quickly accomplished, and I’m glad that the storage closet isn’t as scary as it was.

We have a lot done, but I would like to add a few more decorations here and there. Here are a few photos from around our house.

The dining room is now home to the Christmas tree, and a few Christmas displays too. I love the glow of the Christmas tree at night.

The foyer has a few decorations too,

and laundry that needs folded. Ugh, I still haven’t gotten the house quite back together yet.

This year I’ve added Christmas decorations to the kitchen.

There are bright ornaments, and white lights lining my prep-space.

I’ve also lined a small cabinet with seasonal vintage Pyrex pieces, and white Christmas lights.

It is lovely in the evening, and the kitchen looks cheerier too.

It is cold, and dark earlier and earlier here. So I’ve been kicking it on the couch with my hubby.

You can’t beat curling up with a big mug of hot cocoa, a crochet project that needs finished before Christmas, and a few episodes of BSG too.

How is your Christmas decorating going? Are you decorating outdoors as well as indoors?

Weekend Painting Project

Last weekend we switched up the color of the upstairs hallway. It was a pretty cafe latte, and we painted it  modern grey.

It didn’t take too long to paint, but the prepping and taping took me a bit. I would love to paint all of the woodwork upstairs, but that will have to wait until cooler months. It is crazy hot upstairs in the Summer.

We used Sherwin Williams Modern Grey, and the color made the hallway nice and bright. It also gave the upstairs hallway a new modern look. I think we need some cool artwork for the walls, and we’ll be all set.

We still have the boy’s room to paint upstairs and the bathroom too. Agnes wants to repaint her room purple. We’ll see what project we get to next.

The All Too Messy Upstairs Closet

I have three cleaning projects in my house that I need to do, but I really truly dread doing. The Utility Room storage needs to be cleaned out, pared down, and re-organized. The Scary closet downstairs needs a lot of work. It is home to holiday supplies, and odds and ends that I throw in there when I have no idea what else to do with them. Lastly, the upstairs hallway and closet are in need of some serious cleaning. The closet is packed, and the mess is piling up in the hallway.

I walk by the upstairs mess several times a day, but I could never see a good time to clean it, or where to even begin with the huge mess. Last weekend James surprised me by pulling everything out of the closet, and well, it was decided we were going to tackle the mess right then and there.

It took several hours. We cleaned out at least eight large boxes of papers/stuff/things that made us say just why did we keep that. We also hauled out two very full contractor bags full of clutter.

We stopped, and took a little break and went shopping for some supplies. We picked bins and totes to organize what we would be keeping.

These two large bins are filled with the boy’s papers from school.  I think I need a few more of them, I might have another box or two hanging out in the scary downstairs closet.

The end result looks fantastic. We cleaned out so much, and we have room to store more bins if we need to. We are planning on painting the shelves, and I’m going to make a curtain to cover the closet.

It was one of those projects that I really didn’t want to do, but I am so glad that it is done. It’s nice to have the upstairs a little more clutter free. Now on to the next mess.

The Messiest Room

The messiest room in the house, just happens to be my favorite one…

There are projects everywhere.

There are books piled everywhere too.

The big kitty loves to nap there.

The kids wake us up extra early on the weekends via lightsabers.

Agnes loves to play dress-up there too.

In case you haven’t guessed it, the messiest room is our bedroom. It is the smallest room with mismatched curtains, and walls in need of a paint job. This last weekend, we took some time and worked on the messiest room in the house.

We moved out furniture, took down the curtains, and taped all over the place. We primed the walls, and already the white primer was a nice improvement.

We didn’t stop there though. We invested in new curtains for the room, and we painted the walls. We used Sherwin-Williams Obi Lilac for the walls, and I love the soothing tone of this color.

There is still a bit of work to be done in the room, but we are off to a great start. I love the new color, it has really changed the look of our bedroom.
