Bean Greens

0011

Despite my complete garden neglect (weeds!!) we actually picked a few green beans this week! Dylan is my awesome helper in the garden, he loves to water the plants, and the sidewalk, and his feet, but this time he was really excited when he saw the “bean greens”. That is what he shrieked as we picked a handful of Green beans.

I’m hoping for just a few more green beans out of the garden, so I can make a mini batch of Crock Pot Green Beans and Potatoes.

The Garden is a Mess

Several rainy days, and with me under the weather too, today I finally got out to the backyard to check out the gardens. The hostas were in need of a little extra water, but the hanging baskets were just fine. The butterfly garden just istn’ sprouting, and the veggie gardens are overgrown with dandelions and evil evil thistles. I don’t know if this was the best year for me to get to gardening.

James and I walked the backyard and talked about next year’s garden, and it was fun to make future plans. I’ll have to get a tiller though, and get better about weeding.

On a happier note though, I’ve got 5 okra plants that are doing well, and 3 green bean plants that are blooming. I also have a row of corn that is doing great, so maybe just maybe we’ll get some tasty corn on the cob out of the garden. I’m debating whether or not to replant some of the seeds, and hope for warmer Fall weather, and a late second crop of veggies, but I just don’t know if I can keep up with the weeding…

May’s No Driving Days

During the month of April, I didn’t do so hot, but I did much better in May. I counted up the days and I had 4 no driving days, much better. That brings my year to date total up to 22 days, and I’m only 8 no driving days away from my goal. I hope to have an entire month of no driving days before the new year rolls around. We’ll see how June goes.

What’s Growing

0091

My cat was curious… What’s growing in the Garden?

0021

The Green Beans are doing well, but so are the weeds. I’m still determined to keep this garden of mine organic, and pesticide free, but I have to get out and weed everyday. Especially after it rains, like it is today…

0032

The Cucumber have been moved to a new garden, and they love their new location. I think I have about 7 happy cucumber plants this season.

004

Okra is new to the garden this year, and I have at least 5 plants that are doing well. I hope to get a pretty good crop of Okra this Summer, we love it at our house.

0052

Sweet Corn is also a new addition this year, and it is growing like crazy!

006

Is it a Watermelon plant or a Cantaloupe plant? How I wish I could find my notes that tell me what I planted there…

The little yellow Squash have also been moved to a new garden this year too. I have at least 4 plants that have sprouted.

This year’s garden is much different from last year’s. I have fewer plants, but I planted many more. I think it is due in part to the excess of rain that we have had, I just don’t know if the little seeds could handle that much water. I also counter-planted the vegetable garden with a butterfly garden, but no little flower sprouts just yet. I’m anxious to see those Sunflowers and Pumpkins sprout too.

Strawberries, Strawberries, Strawberries

Thursday I had a phone call, and it was my good friend Maggie. She wanted to see what we had planned for the morning, and if we wanted to come over for a bit. All of her kids were playing in the backyard, and she was busy picking strawberries. We headed over to help.

0031

Boy was I glad to help. We picked strawberries for about an hour and a half, and I got to bring home a big bowl of fresh from the garden Strawberries.

0051

Some of them were made into Strawberry Shortcake.

009

A few made their way into Strawberry Oatmeal muffins.

But James favorite was the Strawberry Cake! Too Good!

007

Some didn’t make it home to go into delicious recipes cause they went straight off the plant and into my tummy, oh so yummy. Thanks again to Maggie for all of the yummy garden goodies!
