Handmade Christmas Gifts 2015

IMG_5911

Throughout 2015 I crocheted many handmade gifts for friends, teachers, and family too. I had set a goal last year to crochet a blanket for each and every family member. That meant eight blankets needed to be made. I am happy to report that I made my goal, and I think my family appreciated the gifts too.

I think I made at least twenty scarves for the kids teachers and friends of the family too.

I also crocheted wreaths for Agnes and Dylan to pass out for gift bags at Christmas. I think I crocheted forty-five of them for the kiddos.

Here are some photos of all of the handmade blankets that I gifted this year.

I made this colorful granny-square blanket for my Mother in law. She was the one who taught me how to make a granny-square a few years ago.

I made this African flower blanket for my Mother. She said that her grandmother made a blanket just like this one many years ago. I think that is pretty cool.

I made this super cozy grey blanket for my soon to be Brother in law.

IMG_5276

I called this one my granny-burst blanket for my Brother’s girlfriend. This blanket had little granny-circles encompassed in squares, and the white yarn made the bright colors pop.

I made this lovely hexagon blanket for my Sister (in law) . I loved the look of this blanket, it looks like stained glass.

IMG_5565

I made this bright-striped blanket for my Brother. This blanket came together quickly. This one was the biggest blanket that I made, but it only took me about a month and a half to complete it.

Just in time for Christmas, I finished up these beautiful granny-square blankets for my darling nieces. How I love those darling little ones.

It was really fun crafting and crocheting through the year. I am so happy that I met my goal for handmade gifts. This year I’m teaching myself how to knit. Maybe I’ll make knitted gifts for everyone next Christmas.

December’s Crafting Review

I decided to change the title from crochet review to crafting review, since I’m teaching myself to knit. Maybe I’ll break out the sewing machine and add that into the mix too.

IMG_5878

The last few winters I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit. I finally decided December was the month to try.

IMG_5883

I grabbed some books from the library, and watched a few videos on youtube. After many tries I got the hang of the long tail cast on.

IMG_5890

Let’s just say that at first I wasn’t so sure about knitting. There seemed to be more casting on and taking apart than actual knitting being done.

IMG_5895

I tried out several different sizes of needles, and many different types of yarn. After about three weeks I finally started to see some progress.

IMG_5979

I haven’t finished a project yet, but I am doing a bit better at knitting. Don’t ask me about purling though, I still don’t have the hang of it.

With the cold temps, I crocheted on lots of little projects here and there.

IMG_5898

I’m still using up some of my scrap yarn, I started working on a multi-stitch blanket. There isn’t a pattern to this blanket, just lots of practice on different stitches.

Speaking of scrap yarn…

IMG_5897

I finished up the scrappy blanket.

IMG_5901

Let me tell you a bit about this blanket. I used a size 8 hook, and half-double crocheted the entire thing. It is extra warm, and this blanket has become the most coveted blanket in the house. All of the kids are asking for one that is just for them. Time to save up some more scraps.

IMG_5909

Lastly I made a blanket for Lula. She prefers to be outdoors, but sometimes she likes to sneak in for just a bit.

IMG_5960

I chose lots of different shades of purple, plum, and pink.

IMG_5961

I went with the J size hook (me favorite) and stuck with the half-double crochet stitch.

IMG_5973

I worked on it off and on for about two days, and finished it up before the weather got too cool. James and the kiddos made a little outdoor hutch for Lula, and the blanket fit nicely in it.

Now it is January, and I don’t have any big projects going on… I kinda miss it.

Learning To Knit

So I’m teaching myself to knit. It is a slow-going process, but it is really fun to be learning something new.

IMG_5873

I started off by heading to the library for some books.

IMG_5878

I also bought a few sets of Knitting Needles. I wanted to try out a few different sizes, and see which one worked out best for me. After three years with a crochet hook, knitting needles feel pretty strange and awkward.

IMG_5883

Practice, practice, practice. Different yarn, different casting on techniques. Unraveling started project after project.

IMG_5887

I then went to youtube to watch a few videos. The books were helpful, but I found watching others knit really clicked with me.

IMG_5891

About a week of practice, and I’m slowly getting the hang of the knit stitch, and the long-tail cast on.

IMG_5892

Next I need to learn how to purl and bind off. And maybe then I can finish a project.

I hope to continue learning to knit over the winter months. It is a fun new hobby to keep me busy.

Crochet Crafts

My hand is almost all healed, so I’ve been cooking and crocheting. I’m happy to have a hook back in my hand.

IMG_5756

I’ve been working on another scrappy blanket during the evenings. The weather is already cooling off, and this little blanket is extra warm.

Just in time for Christmas. I finished all eight of my gift blankets for our family. I am so happy to have this project completed.

I tried my hand at amigurumi for Miss Agnes.  At first this little animal was going to be a bunny, and then I thought a bear.

IMG_5642

It ended up being a little cat named Mittens.

IMG_5594

I’ve been making some scarves too. Some are for teacher gifts, some are for the kids since they have outgrown their other ones. I even made one for myself.

I’m also crocheting Christmas ornaments for Agnes’ class. They have a little gift exchange on the last day before Winter break.

IMG_5647

The little wreaths are so cute. I might end up making some for Dylan’s class too.

School Is Out Today

The kids have an inservice day today, so everyone is home for the day. It has been a loud day, and I am looking forward to the quiet of Tuesday.

IMG_5661

Agnes lost her second tooth today, so she was extra excited!

I’ve just been cooking, cleaning, and trying to keep up with the kids.

IMG_5652

I’ve been sneaking in a little crochet here and there too. I’ve been working on a scarf for me.

IMG_5659

I finished it up last night while watching The Walking Dead and The Leftovers. I love crocheting during Sunday night t.v.
