Task Master

This week has been filled with housework. Catching up laundry, cleaning up the kitchen, including that giant pile of neglected dirty dishes, and cleaning the boy’s room a little bit everyday.

And coffee, lots and lots of coffee…

Last week I had terrible migraines, and I think I slept away four solid days. It is funny just how much doesn’t get done around the house when the homemaker is ill. I’m feeling much better this week, and motivated to get this house back in order.

Jinx isn’t helping with any of the tasks though, she just wants snuggles.

Thursday: Things to Throw Away

Have I mentioned that the house is getting to me?!?

Like really getting to me…

While the kids were home on Christmas break the messes and piles started sneaking up everywhere. The dishes piled up from constant cooking, and the laundry was everywhere. Last weekend we ended up with a four day weekend, and again I looked around the house and saw messes everywhere. There is a giant pile of unopened boxes from Christmas in the office, papers are all over the dining room table, and don’t even get me started on the kids rooms.

I sighed, booted up my laptop, and started looking at homes on realtor.com . We could really use another three rooms, I could really use a dishwasher, and James needs a home office in a basement.  Then I thought about moving expenses, and rethought my cluttered life.

I’m taking it one mess at a time, and tackling one bag of clutter every Thursday. Today I set in on my unused craft supply dresser. I managed to get an entire full trash bag out of that small space. I gathered up the bag, and got it right out to the trash.

I also started a “donations bin” in the upstairs hallway for all of those clothes that the kids are outgrowing. Dylan has been really good about donating so far. I’ve removed a few more unused items from my closet too.

I would love to live the minimalist lifestyle, but with four other humans, a cat, and a dog, and a serious yarn habit, I don’t think that is going to happen. I’ll still dream of maybe one day moving to a new home, but for now I’m going to focus on what I can do around mine. At one bag a week, I think I can manage that.

Clearing Out The Clutter

While the kids home for a good three weeks on Christmas break, the house got trashed… There is stuff piled here, there, and everywhere, it is driving me crazy! Monday, I woke up extra early, and cleaned the living room. I got a big bag of clutter out of the house, just from one corner of the room. I was feeling pretty good about it, so I moved on to one of the kitchen cabinets. I got another full bag out, and now I’ve got a little more space to store paper towels. Both of those cleaning tasks were fast, and I’m going to keep it up throughout the house.

I’ve also cleaned out the closets. I cleaned out my closet, and all of the kids closets right before Christmas. I love the donation bins around town, they make it easy to donate unused and outgrown clothes.

Today, the kids were back to school, so I spent a lot of time just catching up on dishes and laundry. Next week, I hope to get a few larger cleaning projects accomplished.

Around The House

This week I’m planning menus, making shopping lists, gathering recipes, folding laundry, washing dishes, and getting my timeline of Thanksgiving cooking together.

Today, while the kids are busy at school, I started cleaning upstairs. I changed the bedding in the boys room, swept up the hallway, and tidied up Agnes’ room too. Then I moved downstairs to take out the trash and start washing all of the dishes for Thanksgiving dinner.

I then started worrying about the state of the utility room, and all of those other rooms that nobody ever visits on Thanksgiving, and it got me thinking “the family isn’t visiting to critique my cleaning skills, they are here for the tasty food. ” After that I worried a little bit less about all of the cleaning tasks that I wouldn’t get accomplished. The ones that I do get done,  my kids will destroy them as soon as they are home from school, so there you go.

I’ve got to stress less this holiday season. What about you… Are you getting your home ready for Thanksgiving?

O.K. House It’s Me vs. You

So this Summer, the house has gotten away from me… I really hate that when it happens. The laundry is piled up, the dishes are piled up, there are little piles of clutter all over every single surface downstairs, and I’m not even going to start with the state of the kids rooms. Time to do something about it!
