With a Little Help from the Wiggles

Chances are if you have a toddler or grandchild (or not) you’ve probably heard of the Wiggles. Both of my kids are really into the Wiggles at the moment, and Thade and I have been watching their videos on You Tube. Well they have this great song all about making “Fruit Salad”, and just how yummy it is. Thade isn’t much of a fruit or veggie eater, but I thought that maybe with a little help from the Wiggles, he just might give it a try…

We watched the video a few (dozen) times, and I picked up all of the ingredients at the store. I did my best Wiggle impersonation as I cut up the cantaloupe, and Thade happily stirred in the Red Grapes. We placed our Wiggles Fruit Salad in the fridge, and waited until dinner time.

When dinner finally rolled around I got out our fruit salad, and sang the song one more time. Dylan dove into his fruit salad (every bite was in teeny tiny pieces), he loves his fruits and veggies. Thade wasn’t buying it, and told me just how yucky the fruit salad was, but he would eat the bananas. Oh well, I’ll give it another try, and maybe with a little more Wiggles motivation, Thade will eventually like it.

Do you have any tips or tricks that get your child or grandchild to eat their fruits and veggies?

  1. When my kids were toddlers, the loved Barney. He has lots of catchy songs about eating fruit and veggies. Another favorite was Teletubbies. They have some cute episodes about farm life and going to the market that my kids reall loved to watch over and over. The Wiggles are cute, and the appeal to moms too!

  2. Thanks Mimi! Dylan will eat anything fruits and veggies, and Thade is completely the opposite, he won’t eat anything, he is super picky! I hope that it is just a phase that he will grow out of, and soon 😉

My boy’s like Barney and the Teletubbies too, but they are all about the Wiggles at the moment. Thade is even asking if he can be one of the Wiggles for Halloween 🙂

  3. How on earth did I miss this LOL???

Nicole, have you heard of the cookbook that Jerry Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica, wrote called “Deceptively Delicious”? She adds veggie purees to a variety of things, while still offering veggies with the meal…just in case one day the kiddos decide to try it, I suppose. Apparently you can’t taste the veggie puree in the foods…

Kylie is a horrible, horrible eater. She has aversions to certain textures and hates the way that some foods feel in her mouth. I used to make her a grilled cheese sandwich and put finely grated carrot in it. She never noticed it (but it was covered in so much ketchup I’m sure that hid the taste LOL). Jacob will eat anything put in front of him…he went through a picky stage around age 3 so I just kept offering him the healthy stuff and eventually he pulled though 😀 . I’m sure it will be the same for your guy.

Holy smokes, long comment or what LOL!!!

  4. Thanks Susan! The cookbook sounds great and sneaky too. Thade is a super picky eater, I hope that he grows out of eventually. Dylan is a pretty good eater, he will eat just about anything that you put in front of him, or at least give it a try 😉 Thanks again for the help with my picky guy!
