About six months ago I switched fabric softener brands to save on my laundry costs. I used to buy Downy Free and Sensitive , but when it hitΒ $7.00, I knew I had to find another brand. I still needed a “Free and Clear” formula, and luckily I came across Purex Soft Sensitive for $2.98!
The price was right, but the scent was a little strong for me. I made it work, by saving a used bottle and splitting the fabric softener evenly between the two bottles. I then fill them up with water, and I have enough fabric softener to last me a few months.
When it was time to restock the Fabric Softener, I had a coupon for $1.00 off. After the coupon savings and stretching the fabric softener, it only cost $1.00 a bottle to cover all of my laundry needs. That is much better than spending $7.00 a bottle for Fabric Softener.
Do you have any tips or suggestions to help stretch your laundry supplies?

Cool, I will have to try watering down my fabric softener…I have wondered if that would work! You’re so smart, Nicole π .
I used to use dryer sheets, but now that I’m hanging my laundry to dry again, I don’t need them. But when I was using them, I would use a quarter of one sheet in each load and it worked exactly the same. Took me 3 years to go through a jumbo box π .
And we have front loaders…I don’t use the HE detergent like you’re supposed to, I’ve just been using a tbsp measure of regular powder in every load. I bought a jumbo box of powdered detergent last year and I’m only about half way through. Works perfectly.
I’m a stickler for Downey, but I do put less in the machine and add more water. Still works well.. I know when things were tight we used baking soda, just can’t recall if that was for the detergent or the softner. But it worked well too. I just enjoy that clean Downey smell when I am line drying my clothes in the summer.
How is your headache?? I hope you had a better day today. tHanks for posting ways to save money and the creative ways you are doing it. I think everyone can use and share some hints as the cost of items keeps going up! Heather
Thanks Susan! Those are great laundry tips! I love the smell of dryer sheets, but Dylan’s skin is too sensitive for them. I have to say, I’m a bit jealous of your front load washer and dryer, they are too cool. Thanks again for sharing your great tips!
Thanks Nana! I try to stretch those laundry dollars as far as I can π
Thanks Heather! I love the smell of Downy too. Dylan has super sensitive skin so everything has to be free and clear here. I seem to go through a ton of fabric softener and detergent here… boys π
Thanks for the well wishes too, I’m feeling much better, and I’m hoping that the headaches stay away for awhile. Sending big hugs your way!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. I woke from a nap today with a headache, but some tylenol did the trick. Knock on wood, no migraines.. H
Thanks Heather! I hope that you feel better soon π I’m a big fan of Tylenol, and a big cup of coffee too π Sending well wishes and big hugs your way!
I discovered Purex a couple of years ago, and have been really happy with it. Another in-a-pinch fabric softener option is white vinegar. Just pour it in the cup like you would the softener. It does NOT make your duds as soft, but it IS better than nothing. I prefer to use it on the towels, in fact; it doesn’t leave that film that fabric softener can leave. Never thought of diluting the real stuff, though… thanks for the tip! Headache…. BE GONE….We girls have stuff to do… no time for that! Hope you’re feeling better π
Thanks Ditarae! Thanks for sharing your helpful tip too, I’ll give the white vinegar a try. I’ve been really happy with Purex products and the price is great π
I’m feeling better, and the headache has finally gone away. I agree with you, there is too much to do, and no time for headaches π
Thanks Nana! That is a great tip, and a great way to save too π
